With both before and after-school programming already in operation throughout Detroit and Wayne County, Beat the Streets Detroit (BTSD) is a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that uses the sport of wrestling to develop and strengthen mental health and physical literacy, positive decision-making, and leadership skills, all while focusing on closing the disparity gap in GPA, Attendance, Disciplinary Referrals, and both high school and college Drop Out and Graduation Rate. In addition to wrestling-based programming, BTSD includes healthy food options and meals throughout our 17 locations, along with academic and support services for our student-athletes.
Since our inception in 2009, BTSD has collaborated with the Detroit Public School Community District (DPSCD) to set up wrestling programs and community centers in Detroit and Wayne County. Beat the Streets provides access to high-quality programming and resources for primary school through college-aged youth, as well as continuing education programs for coaches and student-athletes. Through its partnerships with local schools and nonprofits, the organization aims to create generational change and build a better future for the City of Detroit, focusing on developing the skills of at-risk youth in mentoring and leadership, community involvement, program development, identity and character development, physical fitness and nutrition, and academic achievement.
